About West Germany (Steuler)
A West Germany vase is (almost) always made in Germany. Under the name West Germany there are about thirty different brands such as Scheurich, Bay, Jasba, Steuler, Carstens and Dümler&Breiden. During the 1950s through the 1970s, these brands were incredibly popular and many vases were produced during this period. A West Germany vase can be recognized by its “bouncy” appearance with a professionally applied glaze.
The Steuler factory was founded in 1917 by Georg Steuler in Hohr-Grenzhausen and closed its doors in 1996. Typically, the bottom of a West Germany vase bears the word ‘Germany’, but this is not the case with the Steuler creations. Here there is an embossed ST monogram, then the model number, followed by a slash and two numbers indicating the height in centimeters. The factory closed its doors in 1996.
