About Royal Goedewaagen (1610-present)
For more than 400 years, Royal Goedewaagen has been making pottery, Delftware and ceramics. They are known for their high-quality ceramic works. The foundation for today’s Royal Goedewaagen was laid in 1610 in the pottery factory ‘De Star’. They produced affordable eating and drinking service at that time. In the following century, the Netherlands grew into one of the most important trading states for tobacco. Entrepreneur Dirck Goedewaagen, associated with the pipe makers’ guild, jumped on this demand in 1779 by increasing the production of pipes and became the largest pipe manufacturer in the Netherlands. In addition, Royal Goedewaagen continued to produce utility pottery. In 1923 the Amsterdam factory “De Distel” was taken over, making even more good craftsmen available for Goedewaagen. During this period, Jugendstil and Art Deco models were included in the production. Starting in 1984, the factory was located in Nieuw-Buinen in Drenthe instead of Gouda, as more labor was available in this area.
