Delft Blue Candlestick (Royal Delft – Porceleyne Fles)

This Delft Blue candlestick was manufactured in 1974 at the Porceleyne Fles (Royal Delft) in Delft. The candlestick is hand-painted: floral motifs are depicted on all sides. At the bottom is the mark of De Porceleyne Fles: an apothecary jar with the initials JT intertwined underneath (these stand for Joost Thooft, owner of the company in 1876). Below the bottle is the word ‘Delft’ with a curly capital letter D. On the left are the painter’s initials: MVK, the yearcode CT (1974) and the modelnumber 865.

The Delft-based Porceleyne Fles ceramics factory, also known as Royal Delft, is the only manufacturer of Delftware still in existence in Delft, which has been hand-painting decorations on objects such as vases, wall plates, tiles and jugs since 1653, in accordance with old tradition. De Porceleyne Fles is known worldwide for its products and in 1919 the factory received the designation Royal.
