It’s almost that time again. The Good Saint will soon be visiting everyone (hopefully), and going wild with candies and gifts. For those who have been good at least…
And the good news is: Sinterklaas is definitely not just for the little ones. It’s the perfect excuse to go all out, not only for others, but also for yourself! Because let’s be honest: you deserve a little pampering every now and then.
I personally think Sinterklaas (or Sint Nicolaas, Goedheiligman, Sint or whatever you want to call the dude) is a top tradition. I love to make people happy with beautiful things (as you probably already knew). And the month of December, including ‘Pakjesavond’, is perfect for that!
Back in the days; a little bit of history
Nowadays we are so into ‘our version’ of the Sinterklaas party, that we no longer think about how it actually started. So here’s a reminder to refresh your memory:
Rich Bishop of Myra
St. Nicholas was a bishop who lived in Myra, Turkey in the fourth century. He was super rich, because his parents died when he was young and left him a lot of money. Fortunately, the best man was not only rich, but also very nice. He helped the poor where he could, by giving them secret gifts. Because of all these good deeds, he was soon declared a ‘Saint’.
One night the Saint secretly (not wanting to draw attention to himself), dropped a bag of gold down the chimney of a poor family. The bag fell into a shoe that was standing by the fire to dry. And you guessed it right: ‘Shoe setting’ as we know it today was born.
Sinterklaas died on the night of December 5th; the day we now know in the Netherlands and Belgium as ‘Pakjesavond’.

Or how nice would it be to give someone a beautiful gift set? The Gift Set Small, for example, contains a white, vintage tulip vase, top quality artificial tulips, a colorful tea light holder and a vintage book. For only € 34.95 you will undoubtedly make someone very happy with this!

Before you know it, the Good Saints and his Petes are gone again, and the cheerful ‘twin brother’ of Saint Nicholas is back on the doorstep. Only in a slightly different appearance…But more about this in my next blog!
For now I wish everyone a super nice, cozy and loving Pakjesavond. And remember: Sinterklaas sees everything…
