About West Germany (Walter Gerards)
A West Germany vase is (almost) always made in Germany. Under the name West Germany there are about thirty different brands such as Scheurich, Bay, Jasba, Carstens and Dumbler&Breiden. In the 1950s through the 1970s, these brands were incredibly popular. Many vases were therefore produced during this period. A West Germany vase can be recognized by its “bouncy” appearance with a professionally applied glaze.
In 1957, Walter Gerards KG was founded in Ransbach-Baumbach by Walter Gerards and his wife Elfriede Gerards. Walter KG changed its name to Gerards GmbH in 1974. Around 1977 there were 50 employees, which in a short time grew to 70. The ceramics factory had 6 electric kilns. Elfriede was responsible for operational management and Walter was creative director. Initially the focus was on ceramic plant pots, but in a short time a switch was made to decorative lamps and vases.
