About Royal Goedewaagen (1610-present)
For more than 400 years, Royal Goedewaagen has been making earthenware, Delft Blue and ceramics and is known for its high-quality ceramic works. The basis for the current Royal Goedewaagen was laid in 1610 in the earthenware factory ‘The Star’. At that time they produced dinner- and drinking tableware . In the following century the Netherlands became one of the most important tobacco trading countries. Entrepreneur Dirck Goedewaagen, affiliated with the pipemakers guild, responded to this demand by increasing the production of pipes in 1779 and became the largest pipe manufacturer in the Netherlands. In addition, Royal Goedewaagen continued to produce earthenware. In 1923 the Amsterdam factory ‘De Distel’ was taken over, making even more good craftsmen available for Goedewaagen. In this period Jugendstil and Art Deco models were included in the production. From 1984 the factory was located in Nieuw-Buinen in Drenthe instead of Gouda, as more workers were available in this area.
